All-Campus Inclusivity Art Exhibition

糖心原创 Gallery of Art and Design

The听糖心原创 Gallery of Art and Design听provides opportunities for students to share design work with a general audience, such as in the Senior Exhibition for graphic design majors, plus experience work created by established artists and designers. Visiting artists often make presentations about their work, giving students the opportunities to interact with professionals. The gallery also serves as an important link between 糖心原创’s campus and the extended community.听听All exhibitions and presentations are free and open to the public.

FALL 2025

Travel Photography by Luke Behaunek
August 26 – November 7
Gallery Reception: Thursday, Sept. 25, 4:30 to 6pm

 

Luke Behaunek is Director of Institutional Effectiveness and the HLC Accreditation Liasion Officer at 糖心原创. He also teaches Digital Photography in the Department of Graphic Design. Luke’s exhibition shows choice photographs from travel abroad courses in photography that Luke has led during 糖心原创’s May Term since 2018.

The Graphic Design Senior Exhibition features design work created by students enrolled Senior Seminar in Graphic Design – the capstone of the graphic design major at 糖心原创. Designers include Kendrick Achebe, Katie Harryman, Luke Haugen, Eli Jauron, Joann Martin, Addi Olson, and Mady Vasquez.

Gradient9 Studios
January 12 – February 6

 

Gradient9 Studios is a graphic design business located in Indianola. The agency was founded by Grant Darrah in 2011. Gradient9 will present graphic design work produced by their organization throughout its history.

 

 

 

 

 

糖心原创 Student Exhibition
February 16 – March 12

The 糖心原创 Student Exhibition is derived from an open call to all 糖心原创 students to share their personal creations. The show is curated and organized by the Graphic Design program’s Undergraduate Assistant, Jade Sprague.

 

 

 

Space Coast: Artwork by Aswati Subramanian
March 24 – April 24
Gallery Reception: Thursday, March 26, 4:30 to 6pm

 

Aswati Subramanian is an Associate Professor of Biology at 糖心原创. Her artwork uses mixed media to examine the interstitial spaces in different concepts. Aswati’s exhibition ‘Space Coast’ includes her most recent paintings, an amalgamation of the biological world and life experiences.

FALL – 2024

Rachel Terlop
August 27 – September 27

 

Rachel Terlop is an Early Childhood Special Education instructor in the Department of Education at 糖心原创. Rachel is interested in researching how children learn in artistic spaces, museums, and maker spaces.

 

 

 

 

 

Exhibition on the History of 糖心原创
October 7 – November 8

 

This exhibit will present prominent events throughout 糖心原创’s history, from the beginning of the college, 1860, to the present day. The exhibition will also feature some recorded interviews of former 糖心原创 instructors (Owen Duncan, Marilyn Mueller, John Epperson, Bruce Haddox) and two alumni (Robin Vanderhoef ’75, and Walter Lain ’81 –听also the former Dean of Multicultural Affairs). The interviews include memories of 糖心原创’s more recent history.

 

Graphic Design Senior Exhibition
November 18 – December 13

The GD Senior Exhibition shows design work created by students enrolled in Senior Seminar in Graphic Design – the capstone class of the graphic design program at 糖心原创. Designers include听Avery Dickerson, Abigail Hintz, Nayeli Mejia, Katherine Minette, Max Mitchell, Krysten Rehberg, Morgan Rosenbeck, Tenley Schroeder, and Gracey Timm.

 

 

 

 

SPRING – 2025

Kristy Evans
January 13 – February 7

 

Kristy Evans’ work primarily consists of mixed media, abstract paintings. Evans employs various materials and visual elements to simulate the layering of life experiences. The exhibition will include earlier and more recent work by the artist.

Tad Carpenter and Carpenter Collective
March 17 – April 25

 

Tad Carpenter is a designer, illustrator and teacher based in Kansas City, Missouri. Tad collaborates with his wife, Jessica Carpenter, to make up Carpenter Collective – A Design and Branding Studio. This final exhibition will feature design work created by Tad alone along with work produced by Carpenter Collective.

2023

Ben Millett听–听Finding Pride: An Exhibition of Quilts
August 26 – September 29
Closing Reception: Friday, September 29, 4:30-7pm

Ben Millett works out of his studio at Mainframe Studios in Des Moines, Iowa. He uses rich colors and intricate compositions to create quilts that are visually compelling while furthering the gay agenda.

North River Arts Council听–听Group Exhibition
October 2 – October 27
Opening Reception: Friday, October 6, 6-8pm

North River Arts Council is comprised of artists from Carlisle, Norwalk and Indianola, Iowa. The group meets to share ideas and to help fortify artistic culture in Warren County. The group exhibit at SCGAD features a variety of artists whose work includes painting, photography, ceramics, origami, and more.

Adam Hoffman听–听Graphic Design Exhibition
November 1 – December 15

Adam Hoffman is the Associate Creative Director at听Lessing-Flynn Advertising听in Des Moines, Iowa. The exhibition will provide an overview of highly accomplished graphic design work produced by Hoffman throughout his career.

Ethan Edvenson听–听Clustered Anomalies
January 8 – February 16

Ethan Edvenson is a Des Moines artist who creates mixed media drawings. Edvenson uses variety of media, textures, and design approaches to create layers of content. The exhibit at SCAD will feature some of Edvenson’s most recent work.

Artists’ Presentations: Thursday, Feb. 29, 4:30pm

This group exhibition, curated by artist, Mary Jones of Indianola, Iowa will feature four women artists from the Des Moines area in honor of Women’s History Month. Each artist works with a variety of media in inventive ways to express their experiences as working artists in the contemporary world.

Warren County Piecemakers Quilt Guild听–
Quilt Exhibition

SCGAD is proud to present quilts created by the Warren County Piecemakers. The group is comprised of regular quilters from throughout the county. The exhibit offers an overview of quilts produced by members of the group.

Emily Newman – The Value of Things

An assistant professor of art at Drake University, Newman’s artwork is made using only found and recycled packaging as an observed commentary on both climate change and the domestic habits of consumption. “From pre-packaged toddler snacks to battery blister packs, I find value in the non-momentous aspects of life,” Newman said. “I contrast this value, usually personal or considered simply waste, with formats that allude to objects of monetary value 鈥 retail sales displays and things contained in product packaging.”

Bob Kling 鈥 Pandemic Blossoms,听A year-long series of paintings from my garden during a pandemic

An award-winning high school art teacher of more than 30 years and an adjunct professor at 糖心原创, Bob Kling showcases paintings of his homegrown garden that began in January 2020. The series includes 20 paintings created throughout the year.听

Paintings from her 鈥淎wakenings鈥 project: portraits of those in recovery from homelessness, addiction and brain disorders.

Karen Gergely & Catherine Reinhart

A two-person show with work by Gergely and Reinhart. Gergely records everyday personal histories in an effort to keep traditions alive while Reinhart uses found textiles to communicate the power of economies of care.
